Social Media Influences Investment Decisions :: Web Optimization Techniques

Filed under: search engine marketing book — admin @ 5:57 pm

A new survey from Cogent Research found that US investors are highly engaged in social media, and their investment decisions are being influenced accordingly. The study found that 25% of US online adults are engaged in social media specifically related to personal finance and investing.
Furthermore, almost two-thirds of high-net-worth investors—defined as those with $100,000 or […]

SEOmoz’s 2008 Web 2.0 Awards: The Results :: Keyword Campaign Tools

Filed under: search engine marketing book — admin @ 5:02 pm

Posted by Jane Copland

To quote our fantastic CTO Jeff Pollard, we’re live. 2008’s Web 2.0 Awards are finally complete.

Web 2.0 Awards

SEOmoz’s first Web 2.0 Awards launched two years ago, and today we’ve finished compiling, ranking and awarding hundreds of websites across forty-one categories for the 2008 version. We’ve added new categories and removed outdated ones. We’ve also again teamed with a great group of bloggers, marketers, and web-based business people who acted as our voting panel. I needn’t go into too much detail in this blog post, as the Awards’ zeitgeist explains the details of what happened this year, including some things we feel have changed with the concept and understanding of "Web 2.0."

This is the third installment of the Web 2.0 Awards and this is the first year we’ve awarded real prizes to the winners (aside from the badges we’ve always provided). This year, we’ll be sending customised Jones Soda bottles to the sites that won first place. In debating what sort of prizes would be best for something like the Web 2.0 Awards, we decided to go for an unconventional option. It seemed only appropriate for websites which, by their definition, should be unconventional.

Our latest New Guy (there’s one every week or so) Timmy Christensen has designed some fantastic labels for the bottles. Here’s the label for the Music winner, Last.fm.

We’ve also received eleven interview responses from winning sites, including Last, Google Blog Search, Zillow, and a couple of other great companies. A select few have also treated us to a look inside their offices, which for me is always interesting.

A big thanks go our to all our judges and to Jeff and Rand, who’ve put a lot of effort into the Awards as well. And yes, this is the point at which you can start nominating sites for next year!

Weekly Search Buzz Roundup - 05/16/08: Google Dresses in Green, Yahoo Gets Local & Laser Games Are Played :: Link Juice Tips and Tricks

Filed under: search engine marketing book — admin @ 3:35 am

search-buzz-roundup.gifAnother Friday, another rainy day. For what it’s worth, though, today is a special day, as we are celebrating the first laser. I don’t know if lasers are viewable through cloudy skies, though. Do you?

Mother’s Day

First things first. Did you have a happy Mother’s Day? (Did you even surf the internet on Mother’s Day?) We did. By the way, Chris Boggs, the Search Engine Roundtable design was inspired by our graphic designer, Mabe. Glad you liked it. :)

The First Laser

Today is the 48th anniversary of the first laser. How did I know that? Google told me. Interesting logo choice for sure.

UK Yahoo Users Getting Geo-Targeted Search Page

Want to visit Yahoo.com while you’re in the UK? You may be directed to uk.yahoo.com instead. Does this have anything to do with geo-targeted Yahoo ads? It’s possible, as Barry suspects.

What Background Do You Like Better?

Are you a fan of green? Blue? Yellow? Well, it looks like Google is testing out green backgrounds on the sponsored results. I’m not sure I like it; it’s a little “bolder” than the standard yellow. In my opinion, it sticks out like a sore thumb even though it’s still a pastel green.

Get Creamed by Your Competitor?

According to a recent poll we had on Search Engine Roundtable, most SEOs believe that their competition can hurt their rankings. My question: are you saying this from experience or are you paranoid?

Google Will Let You Buy Alcohol

Okay, just kidding. Google has a rule that disallows hard liquor to be sold, and guess what, they sell materials related to vodka and hard liquor, but since their policy prohibits indexing hard liquor content, Google is not indexing the actual alcohol itself. If you want to buy Vodka on the internet, go to another search engine. Better yet, just go to your local liquor store, flash them your ID, and you’ll be fine.

Is the Yahoo Search Ambassador Program Gone?

Forum members have spotted notifications that the Yahoo Search Ambassador program is being discontinued. Why now? Does it have something to do with Google?

Tomorrow: Google AdWords System Maintenance

If you use any tools based on the Google AdWords API, bear in mind that the Google AdWords system will be down for a few hours tomorrow, May 17th. That’s okay. Go out and have fun. It’s the weekend, after all.

What Romance Novels Can Teach You About Powerful Copywriting :: The Best In Link Bait

Filed under: search engine marketing book — admin @ 1:23 am

I don’t think there’s a more scorned form of literature than the romance novel. “Bodice rippers,” “trashy books” or “that Harlequin crap” are some of the more charitable terms I’ve heard. It was probably pure perversity that led me to try to write one. It was a lot harder than I thought it would be, […]

How to Protect Your Business From Nefarious Subdomain Hijacking :: Adsense Marketing News

Filed under: search engine marketing book — admin @ 11:39 pm

A couple days ago while I was at a conference news came about that Network Solutions was hijacking unused customer subdomains to post links to their other websites. It is getting really hard to trust *many* online service providers.

A big tip for new websites is to use the www subdomain and 301 the non www version to the www version, for 3 reasons

  1. If some nefarious group tries to add subdomains to your site you can easily spot them with a Google search for site:mysite.com -site:www.mysite.com (you could subtract other subdomains if you liked as well, likeso). You can even set up a Google Alert to track Google indexing any subdomains by entering that search in a Google Alert. Once any new subdomain is discovered you can delete any of their nefarious activity and/or add the subdomain and 301 it to your site to reclaim any link popularity (if the domain was expired or re-purchased and the subdomain had some remnant link equity).
  2. Already owning the www and non-www means that they have fewer opportunities to hijack one of your most important subdomains.
  3. Some automated penalties that occur on subdomains do not flow back to the root. If you are using WWW you can move it to another subdomain, but if your core site is at the root (without the www) then you may be out of luck.

Disclaimer: Microsoft Live Search is *really* bad at following 301 redirects. So if you are already using the non-www version and have built a lot of links, then it may not be worth the risk of 301ing it…especially if your site is really clean and you are not pushing any algorithmic limits with aggressive SEO techniques.

In addition to the above tips, ensuring that you software is up to date and using your own non-shared host also helps mitigate the risk of subdomain hijacking. SEO Book reader Rich Atkinson also stated

Another good tip is to create a wildcard dns ‘A’ record for your domain. Then config your web server to 301 all unrecognised hosts to your main site.

This is good for picking up the ww.example.com typos too.

Of course - you may or may not be able to do this on shared hosting.
