Gmail Adds Video and Voice Chat :: Web Optimization Techniques

Filed under: search engine marketing book — admin @ 8:12 pm

Want to see who you’re talking to over your IM? You may want to use iChat or Skype, but now, Google Talk can support voice and IM chat. You can find out more.

For those who are dependent on Skype (and perhaps 3-5% of my friends actually use the service consistently), it’s nice to know that Gmail will probably fill the void for the remaining 95-97%. Many forum members found that Skype’s functionality was limited (you needed XP SP2, for example), so the Gmail solution should work pretty well.

That said, the actual integration of these new features hasn’t come without its criticisms. One person expressed his disappointment that Google has not installed a folders system and he considers that important. (I see the point and I agree that Labels alone are NOT the suitable replacement. A future Gmail Labs feature, perhaps?) Other tweaks have been requested within Gmail that would make the *mail* experience a more productive one.

Google Insights Bookmarklet :: Page Rank Do’s and Don’t!

Filed under: search engine marketing book — admin @ 2:05 am

Just a quick post to pass along a new tool for your keyword research. Googletutor has created a handy bookmarklet that lets you quickly check out the search volume of the phrase you are researching using Google Insights. This gives you a one-click option to grab a little extra research on whatever search term you are checking out at the moment - from Google, Yahoo, or Live. Nice one!

It’s the first ever WordCamp in the Southeast United States (Sept. 27-28), and I’m going to be speaking at it. Yes, I’m nervous, but y’all will just have to deal with the occasional “um, er”, and stutter. I’ll be speaking on SEO for WordPress though, so even if I stumble over my words now and then, the information will still be useful.

Google.com & Google China Sport Logos :: Expert Advice on Web Site Optimization

Filed under: search engine marketing book — admin @ 2:44 am

Today in China, residents are celebrating Teacher’s Day. Consequently, Google has joined in by sporting a nice logo for the occasion.

On this side of the pond, though, there are no teacher’s days to be seen. But that doesn’t mean there are no festivities. Google has its own logo today for the Large Hadron Collider, which apparently is a particle accelerator complex that circulated its first beam today. (Yeah, if you didn’t catch that, well, neither did I. However, Hitwise may help).

Here’s the logo you’ll find on Google.com today:

Dumbing It Down For Your Sales Force :: The Best In Link Bait

Filed under: search engine marketing book — admin @ 12:33 am

Posted by Tim Staines

I recently composed the following letter for one of my clients and figured it might be helpful for some of you. Feel free to use any or all of it and change it as you see fit for your own purposes. Cheers!

Company Website Growth Strategy: How the Sales Team Can Have a Huge Impact

The Concept

When a non-abccompany.com website links to abccompany.com, that website is indicating that there is something of value on the ABC Company website. When search engines, like Google and Yahoo, see that other sites are linking to abccompany.com, they view those links as votes for the ABC Company website and adjust their rankings accordingly. The more links we get from other websites, the higher we will rank in the search engines. Higher ranking search results beget more traffic to our sites, and more traffic to our site means more leads for our sales staff. And everyone knows what more leads for the sales staff means.

The Detail

In order to successfully rank for searches on words like “generic term A” and “generic term B” and “generic category C,” we need to develop links to the specific pages within our site that are most pertinent to the information that the user, customer, or client adviser is searching for. The search engines need to see votes for (links to) specific pages:

http://www.abccompany.com/type/generic_term_a.html and http://www.abccompany.com/type/ generic_term_b.html  and http://www.abccompany.com/division/ generic_category_c.html, respectively.

The other thing we can do to make this effort even more valuable is something I like to call value-added anchor text linking. Anchor text is the text that displays on a web page (typically underlined and blue) and links the user from where they are to a different location. The links above are using anchor text that is not value added. If we really want to get the most out of our time, our links should look like this:

If you have a generic term A or a generic term B or need information on generic category C, you might consider using an ABC Company System to aid in your process.

Value-added anchor text linking makes that vote (link) count for much more. The linking website is saying two things with a value-added anchor text link instead of just one. In the first example we only get the value of #1 below. In the second example, we get the value of #1 and #2:

  1. We’re linking to that particular ABC Company web page because it has the information on it that we can use.
  2. That page that we’re linking to is related to the term “generic term A” or “generic term B” or “generic category C.”

Since we used value-added keyword anchor text, the search engines (Google, Yahoo, etc.) will rank that page higher for the terms we used in the anchor text.

The Simple Process

When you speak with your clients, simply ask them for a link on their website. If they are willing to give you a link, send (Insert Link Builder Name Here) an email with their contact information (phone number and email address) and the type of ABC Company System they are using, have used in the past, or are planning on using. (Insert Link Builder Name Here) will contact them directly, so let them know that they should expect a call.

If you would rather manage this interaction without connecting (Insert Link Builder Name Here) with the client,  send (Insert Link Builder Name Here) an email with your contact information (phone number and email address) and the type of ABC Company System they are using, have used in the past, or are planning on using. (Insert Link Builder Name Here) will call you to discuss.

(Insert Link Builder Name Here)’s Phone Number is XXX-YYY-ZZZZ ext. D; feel free to call him/her with any questions.

Weekly Search Buzz Recap - 06/20/08: Father’s Day, Google Robots.txt and Sitemaps Files & Long Tail Benefits for SEO :: Link Marketing News

Filed under: search engine marketing book — admin @ 12:47 am

search-buzz-roundup.gifAnother Friday marks the end of another busy week. We celebrated Father’s Day and had a nice hot (and a bit rainy) week over here. And yourselves?

Father’s Day

Sunday marked Father’s Day in just about every country (which is so cool — I never knew this!) and search engines celebrated with all dads. We did a little unique design ourselves. What did you think?

Google Webmaster Chat Recordings Now Available

Were you not able to make it to the webmaster live event that was held earlier this week? No problems! There’s a recording of the event for your exploration and edification.

Your Google AdWords Quality Score Accounts for Page Load Time

Does your page load pretty slowly? Are you running Google AdWords on that account? Be advised that it may factor into your AdWords score, so get a fast server or something if that’s a problem.

Your Competitors Can’t Hurt You

…at least according to Google. JohnMu says that in his experience working at Google, he’s never seen anyone hurt their competitors due to bad linking practices. It’s possible in theory, but it’s never actually been observed by someone at the big G.

How Stupid Can You Be?!

I like the comment on my post where I said that Matt Cutts discourages against lying on reconsideration requests. Hello, instead of peeving off Matt and co. so that you can be permanently banned from the index (that’d be nice for such folks, right?), why don’t you spend the time to fix your problems?

Set Up that Robots.txt File

It’s possible, according to what was reported earlier this week, that Google won’t crawl your site if your robots.txt file is unreachable. Make sure your server gives a normal response to Google before you assume you’ll get crawled!

Google Wants Your Sitemaps Too

Also, make sure to get a sitemap for Google to spider your site. I think this is good advice as it helps rather than hurts you. Barry says you should try it out and see what works for you. Personally, I think it works for me. :)

Google.co.uk Explained

Google.co.uk is different than Google.com, but in a sense, there are some similarities. Regardless, webmasters have shared what they notice on Google.co.uk compared to the .com version and there are some notable differences, particularly with geotargeting.

Please Don’t Give Us Ugly Google AdSense Fonts

Google is testing fonts for AdSense ads, and they’ve considered Comic Sans, which I abhor (and I know I’m not alone). Bad idea, Google. Anything but Comic Sans, please. Better yet, keep it consistent with the text of everything else on the page. ;)

Never Fall for a Phish

We get phishing scams everyday, but this is just a reminder to beware of anything that smells phishy, and in this case, that’s Yahoo Search Marketing scams. (Oh, that typo was intended, by the way.) The best option is to just log into your accounts (any that require identifying information) and see if there’s a warning on the dashboard to update security information or whatnot. Never click on those links or respond to them. Identity theft runs rampant and it starts with negligence that usually comes from clicking on email.

Is Google Pay Per Action Going Anywhere?

It seems that the future of Google’s Pay Per Action is bleak, with Google stopping to invite users to the program and us not knowing if it has a long term future. I think it’s a good idea in concept, but it’d be nice to see that it benefits both Google and users who opt in. I guess they haven’t figured that part out yet. Maybe they need to open it up to more people?

The Long Tail Rocks

If you haven’t optimized for the long tail, this thread about the benefits of long tail traffic should make you reconsider. Webmasters are noticing in their logs that users aren’t looking for “cars” anymore. They’re searching for the specific make and model (”lexus es 350″). You want to make sure you’re targeting those terms or you’re going to be losing out on some valuable traffic.

That’s all for now. Have a wonderful weekend :)
