As you surf the web take a look around at many of the sites you see. Do you notice anything that seems strange? Well, let me point it out to you. There are hundreds of thousands of web sites that just don t get much traffic. Some of these sites house hundreds of articles, reviews, tutorials, tools, products, forums to mention a few things, yet still they do not receive large amounts of traffic. What is their problem? They have the content. What is left?

The problem is these sites aren’t optimized for the search engines. SEO, Search Engine Optimization, SE Friendliness, however you refer to it doesn’t matter, the fact is it works and I’m going to tell you what’s involved.

Before we continue let me familiarize you with some relevant terminology in my own words.

**Search Engine Optimization**

Search engine optimization can be referred to as the addition and modification of all variables and extended variables of a web site in hopes of achieving a better position in the search engines. By variables I mean components of a website such as META tags and content. By extended variable I mean things such as links from other sites.

Different SEOs, search engine optimizers, may have different opinions on this but alas this is only my own.

**What is a Search Engine Optimization Company? **

A search engine optimization company is a company that offers the service of creating and adjusting all the variables involved in search engine optimization in order to get your web site the best ranking they can achieve, during the designated project period, for all the major search engines.

**Search Engine Optimization Hurdles**

Back to the question of why these sites rich with content aren’t bringing in the numbers. There are several reasons why sites small and large aren’t optimized for the search engines, fortunately these can be remedied.

1. Many webmasters/site owners believe in “If You Build It They Will Come”. This attitude will get your web site no where fast. Sure if you build it you will get users maybe even a decent amount of users but you will not be unleashing the real potential of your web site.

2. Not feeling that your site can do better than it is. Websites can always be further optimized. Search engines change their algorithms all the time so what worked 2 months ago may not work as well or at all in present times. For any of you that fee you can get your site optimized better, think of the story of the Little Engine and don t think you can, KNOW YOU CAN.

3. Laziness is also a major contributing factor. Many webmasters feel it is just too hard or too time consuming to do search engine optimization.

This is partially true. Search engine optimization is not easy but then again, anyone can do it. It does take time though and time is a precious commodity. In situations where you just can’t devote the time to search engine optimize your site I would recommend seeking the services of a professional search engine optimization company. You can choose one here LilEngine.com 2003

This morning brings news from around the web of losses to the Google Toolbar PageRank (the little green pixels displayed in the toolbar) for a myriad of sites. The best coverage I’ve seen comes from Andy Beard, as well as SEJournal and SELand (which has a comprehensive list of sites discussing the update).

I’ve gone through many of the threads and tried to pull together an accounting of websites that have been "reportedly" affected by the update. Hopefully, by collecting this data, and combining it with reports in the comments, we can have a relatively comprehensive view of the landscape and make educated guesses and hypotheses as to the root causes:

My personal opinion is that these losses are primarily a result of Google’s continuing public relations campaign against paid linking. However, I’m certainly open to other interpretations.

Please do leave comments with any sites you know of that have been affected (or information about any of the sites I’ve listed above that may be inaccurate). Collective data is probably one of the best ways we can assess the situation.

Also - at SEOmoz, through our many tools, we have access to tens of thousands of toolbar PageRank scores for different domains. I’ve asked Jeff & Mel to run through those and request the new data as of today to attempt to identify the quantity of loss. We WILL NOT be exposing individual domains (unless they’ve already been outed elsewhere - as above), but we can provide an overall snapshot about raw percentages, etc. Jarrod Hunt noted in a comment here that he had seen a PageRank drop across the web, not just on sites selling links, and this should be a good way to verify whether our data matches his.

p.s. Please note that I’m not trying to "out" anyone for selling links. In fact, I believe there may be sites on that list that have never engaged in paid linking of any kind! I’m merely trying to document PageRank changes for collective study.

p.p.s. As Duncan Riley noted on Techcrunch, the AOL-owned Weblogs, Inc. blog network appears to have been affected, while Techcrunch’s blog network and rival Gawker media have not.

search” title=”http://payperclickers.net/seo/ask-jeeves-in-spanish.html’>search” target=”_blank”>payperclickers.net/seo/ask-jeeves-in-spanish.html\’>search Engine Optimization - Title Tag

Of all the html tags why do we give such importance to the tag? Why is the tag so important to search” title=”http://payperclickers.net/seo/ask-jeeves-in-spanish.html’>search” target=”_blank”>payperclickers.net/seo/ask-jeeves-in-spanish.html\’>search engines? What criteria do search” title=”http://payperclickers.net/seo/ask-jeeves-in-spanish.html’>search” target=”_blank”>payperclickers.net/seo/ask-jeeves-in-spanish.html\’>search engines use when indexing web pages? Let’s take a look at some of the answers.
Title Tag Importance
One reason why the title tag is so important for search” title=”http://payperclickers.net/seo/ask-jeeves-in-spanish.html’>search” target=”_blank”>payperclickers.net/seo/ask-jeeves-in-spanish.html\’>search engine optimization is that the web page title provides a direct link of relevance for search” title=”http://payperclickers.net/seo/ask-jeeves-in-spanish.html’>search” target=”_blank”>payperclickers.net/seo/ask-jeeves-in-spanish.html\’>search query. When a user enters a search” title=”http://payperclickers.net/seo/ask-jeeves-in-spanish.html’>search” target=”_blank”>payperclickers.net/seo/ask-jeeves-in-spanish.html\’>search for your targeted keyword the SERP (search” title=”http://payperclickers.net/seo/ask-jeeves-in-spanish.html’>search” target=”_blank”>payperclickers.net/seo/ask-jeeves-in-spanish.html\’>search Engine Results Page) will display the most relevant pages.
If we think of search” title=”http://payperclickers.net/seo/ask-jeeves-in-spanish.html’>search” target=”_blank”>payperclickers.net/seo/ask-jeeves-in-spanish.html\’>search Engines in terms of a database, to quicken the search” title=”http://payperclickers.net/seo/ask-jeeves-in-spanish.html’>search” target=”_blank”>payperclickers.net/seo/ask-jeeves-in-spanish.html\’>search speed the search” title=”http://payperclickers.net/seo/ask-jeeves-in-spanish.html’>search” target=”_blank”>payperclickers.net/seo/ask-jeeves-in-spanish.html\’>search engines place an index on the title field. Meaning that the search” title=”http://payperclickers.net/seo/ask-jeeves-in-spanish.html’>search” target=”_blank”>payperclickers.net/seo/ask-jeeves-in-spanish.html\’>search term will be searched” title=”http://payperclickers.net/seo/ask-jeeves-in-spanish.html’>searched” target=”_blank”>payperclickers.net/seo/ask-jeeves-in-spanish.html\’>searched through the titles first, result in a significant speed increase. Otherwise the search” title=”http://payperclickers.net/seo/ask-jeeves-in-spanish.html’>search” target=”_blank”>payperclickers.net/seo/ask-jeeves-in-spanish.html\’>search engine will search” title=”http://payperclickers.net/seo/ask-jeeves-in-spanish.html’>search” target=”_blank”>payperclickers.net/seo/ask-jeeves-in-spanish.html\’>search the whole database for search” title=”http://payperclickers.net/seo/ask-jeeves-in-spanish.html’>search” target=”_blank”>payperclickers.net/seo/ask-jeeves-in-spanish.html\’>search term matches and releance.
Placement of Title Tag
The tag is usually one of the first tags a search” title=”http://payperclickers.net/seo/ask-jeeves-in-spanish.html’>search” target=”_blank”>payperclickers.net/seo/ask-jeeves-in-spanish.html\’>search engine spider reads, after the document declaration, and tags. Our goal is for the tag to be the first tag after the tag.
Keyword Prominence
Exactly where is the keyword or keyword phrase positioned in the tag.
Prominence is measured as a ratio or percentage. Factors that measure the ratio are the position of the keyword, the number of words in the keyword or phrase , and the total number of words in the title tag. For example Keyword1, word2 word3 word4 would result in a keyword prominence of 100%. To calculate the ratio/percentage we know the number of keywords present in the title tag is one and the total number of words is four, so one divided by four = 25%. The prominence ratio allocation would look this 100%, 75%, 50% 25% . In this example the keyword prominence is 100%.
Keyword Density
What’s the percentage or ratio in which your keyword or keyword phrase appear in the title? Keyword density is the total number of keywords or total number or words in a phrase divided by the total number of words in the tag. If our keyword phrase is NASCAR Racing and the title of our web page is Today’s NASCAR Racing News the formula to calculate keyword density is 2 divided by 4 = 50%, reduce to the title to NASCAR Racing News and the keyword density becomes 67%.
Optimizing keyword density can be a Catch 22. Sure we want the highest keyword density possible so search” title=”http://payperclickers.net/seo/ask-jeeves-in-spanish.html’>search” target=”_blank”>payperclickers.net/seo/ask-jeeves-in-spanish.html\’>search Engine Indexers will rank the web page higher. However, we do not want to raise the red flags of the search” title=”http://payperclickers.net/seo/ask-jeeves-in-spanish.html’>search” target=”_blank”>payperclickers.net/seo/ask-jeeves-in-spanish.html\’>search Engine’s Indexing program and be banned from spamming or keyword stuffing.
Keyword Frequency
How many times does your keyword appear in the tag? Count them, this will be your keyword frequency. Pretty simple to calculate. More importance is place on keywords that have a higher frequency. However, do not get carried away like keyword density you do not want to be banned for spamming keywords.
Conclusion
There is no denying that the tag is extremely important for search” title=”http://payperclickers.net/seo/ask-jeeves-in-spanish.html’>search” target=”_blank”>payperclickers.net/seo/ask-jeeves-in-spanish.html\’>search engine optimization. To benefit most with your title tags strive for the following:

  1. High Keyword Prominence
  2. High Keyword Density (without spamming)
  3. Hight Keyword Frequency (without spamming)

On page search” title=”http://payperclickers.net/seo/ask-jeeves-in-spanish.html’>search” target=”_blank”>payperclickers.net/seo/ask-jeeves-in-spanish.html\’>search engine optimization are elements that you can control on your web pages.
