Google Adds “Malicious Behavior” To Google Webmaster Guidelines :: Mypsace News Bulletin

Filed under: internet marketing terms — admin @ 1:08 pm

Beu reports in a Search Engine Watch Forums thread that Google has updated their Webmaster Guidelines again. This time, they added a link to types malicious behavior that is against Google’s guidelines.

Before:

Don’t create pages that install viruses, trojans, or other badware.

After:

Don’t create pages with malicious behavior, such as phishing or installing viruses, trojans, or other badware.

The link takes you to a page on Installing viruses and other badware.

Frank, AussieWebmaster comments saying, “you figure that would be understood by now.” But in reality, you would think that way about most of Google’s Webmaster Guidelines. Google can’t win on that front, I’ll give it to Google on that one.

Forum discussion at Search Engine Watch Forums.

Update From Matt Cutts of Google: Just want to highlight a comment from Matt on this entry:

I wanted us to be crystal clear that we may remove phishing urls as well.

Google Fixes Major Maps Bug on Firefox for Macs :: Mypsace News Bulletin

Filed under: internet marketing terms — admin @ 12:46 pm

Since March 13th, Google Maps was not showing the time or distance to destination, in the driving directions for users of Firefox on a Mac.

A Google Groups thread has a historical look at the issue. I see that the first reports start on March 13th and then on March 14th Maps Guide Jen, said she will look into the issue.

About a day later it was fixed.

The issue seemed to only happen on Firefox for Mac and was likely just a rendering issue. Personally, not a major search deal at the moment, but I like to document these cases for later.

Digg’s Algorithm Cut Front Page Promotions by 38% :: MSN/Live Search News

Filed under: internet marketing terms — admin @ 1:26 pm

Do you all remember Digg’s algorithm change in January? Well, it looks like I was right when I claimed that Digg jumped the shark. Pierre at Social Alerter actually provided an in-depth analysis of how the algorithm impacted the popularity of front page stories. In his post, Digg’s Algo Change Cut Promotions by 38%, he shows data that supports this statement. Then he asks, “The question is, was the change worth it for Digg? Did the quality of promoted stories go up? Did it increase the number of users? Only Digg the company and the Digg users can answer those.”

Let me give you a short answer: Digg became less of a tech-centric site and more of a mess of random junk. For example, did this story need to hit the front page? Thank you, captain obvious, but I like informational news, not junk.

As some people notice, however, the Digg stories that do get promoted get a lot more traffic. (Not from me, though.) And at this point, I think that Digg can’t really have a “fan base” because it totally killed user morale–at least to some like yours truly.

Test Your Page Load Time Before Google Tests it For You :: Google PageRank Update

Filed under: internet marketing terms — admin @ 12:58 pm

So Google confirmed page load time will be a factor in the quality score and it is just a matter of time for this to be implemented. In fact, the Inside AdWords blog posted an official announcement about it last night.

Search Engine Watch Forums moderator, abbottsys, doesn’t want to wait for Google to test his page’s load time, instead, he is taking action now. He posted a nifty tool to test a page load time. The tool is at Pingdom.com and is pretty nifty.

Here is a graph of the load time for my article above:

Page Load Time Tool

My total load time is 1.9 seconds, what is really slowing me down is the Google Custom Search Engine which took the longest time to load.

So test out your landing pages before Google does. Yes, you will have several weeks of Google testing them out for you, but if you are in a rush, why wait? Plus, who cares what Google finds to be slow now, it is more about closing your deal.

Idiot’s Guide to Blogging: It’s the Content :: Social Blog Network News

Filed under: internet marketing terms — admin @ 1:26 pm

Posted by captdallas2

After starting a number of blogs and watching most auger in with flames, I have learned the hard way a few tips that have elevated me to blogging mediocrity.  While I am sure most of these hints have been covered, there may be a few that are helpful.

Regular posts: If you write something that people, not web crawlers, like, you need to keep them happy.  One post a week minimum, with two being a better choice.  Daily bloggers are fantastic, it’s often not an option for the lone blogger.  Companies with blogs should have enough contributors to keep things current (like here at SEOmoz).

Set realistic goals: If you are just blogging for AdSense cash or affiliate earnings, you need to know you have a long row to hoe.  Yes, you can still hit a home run, but the competition increases every day.  Unless you happen to be tight with Britney, Paris, or Lindsey, odds are it will take time for you to find your niche.  That said, there are plenty of niches that can be filled.

Content, Content, Content: Chose a theme that really blows wind up your skirt!  You need to write lots of relevant content, and if you are not a professional writer it will be hard to keep the content coming.  For the average blogger, write about what is a passion in your life.  If you are jaded, write about the things that tick you off.  Give your readers part of yourself.  Being a gifted writer helps, but clear, simple writing styles work extremely well.  Say what you think with good spelling and consistent grammar.  You don’t have to have great grammar, you just have to convey thoughts without people cringing.

Promotion? Not at first.  Search engines will find your stuff.  Use that time to build content, review/edit your content, and plan more content.  When the time for promotion hits, promote only the best of your content. Start slowly in topic-related forums to get feedback.  With good feedback, more involvement in related forums will increase your traffic and generate inbound links.

Links: Link tricks are best left to guys with high ranked sites to play with.  The average blogger should build links the old fashioned way, with signatures in popular topic related forums.  You can also get cheap links by mentioning towns or searched topics.  Topix.com searches the web for news related to just about every town in the US and tons of topics.  There are plenty of other sites that auto include links to related content.  Write more content and you will have more relevant inbound links.  The better your topic selection and writing skills, the more unsolicited links you will get.

Keyword suggestion tools:  Wordtracker, Google Sandbox, and Keyword Discovery (and, with any luck, SEOmoz, hint hint [from Rebecca: we read you loud and clear) have keyword suggestion tools that will help you focus the theme of your blog to improve traffic.  Running your theme or a few topics through the tools will give you better key phrases for your content and ideas for future content.

Keyword density: If you write focused content, the keyword density is automatic.  Your target is 3 to 5 percent of your page URL.  A descriptive title reinforced in the first paragraph with a mention in the body and at the conclusion covers the keyword density issue.  A photo caption with the keywords is gravy.  Using related terms in the text spices it all up.

That is enough for a first post.  Oh, did I mention short pithy paragraphs with meaningful headings?

Conference Controversy: Paying Speakers & Sponsor Paid Sessions :: StumbleUpon Update

Filed under: internet marketing terms — admin @ 12:58 pm

Two threads erupted yesterday all on conference controversy in the search industry. We have a thread on the controversy of paying speakers at Cre8asite Forums and a thread on the controversy of sponsor paid and run sessions at Sphinn.

Should Search Conferences Pay All Speakers?
This is far from a new question, this question is on the minds of all speakers and those who have been in the conference circuit forever. There is knowledge that some speakers are compensated for their flights, hotel and food and sometimes even more. Some smaller conferences actually cover speaker costs and pay a hefty fee to them for speaking. But conferences like SES and SMX typically do not pay speakers and if they do pay speakers, they typically don’t cover anything outside of covering flight, hotel, food and miscellaneous fees. But yes, some speakers are compensated at SES and SMX for their costs.

Let’s start with keynote speakers. People like Barry Diller, Eric Schmidt, Louis Monier, Jerry Yang and so on are likely not compensated. Think about it, these guys are well off, how much money would a person like Diller, Schmidt, Yang accept to speak at a conference? I doubt any real money an SES or SMX can afford would entice them. So these guys, in my opinion, are not compensated in any way.

How about company representatives from Google, Yahoo, Microsoft and so on? Their companies pay for them to fly to conferences, book their hotels, pay for their meals and so on. Why do they do this? For webmaster and advertiser relation. I doubt the conferences pay them, because in a sense - you, the advertisers are already paying for them to come with your PPC spend.

Mostly everyone else who speak do it for the face time and potential business they might get out of it. So the air time and business cards they get from speaking, covers their costs in the long run.

But there are some who don’t get business out of going to these conferences. If they are invited and attendees love to hear them, they are paid. Danny Sullivan did twit that the conference do cover some speakers who are “small consultants doing solo stuff,” and adds “say you’re doing a session where you’re not likely to get much client work but you kick ass on a regular basis. that’s one example.”

The forum thread at Cre8asite Forums is neutral on the concept of paying some speakers. I suspect if one speaker doesn’t get paid, while another one does - it may be possibly insulting or upsetting to the one not getting paid.

How about us? The press who cover the sessions? No, we don’t get paid to cover sessions. I mean, we do have ads on the page, but those aren’t from session coverage, they are from posts like theses. Our live blog volunteers pay their own way, we don’t cover their hotel, food, travel but we do provide a press pass that comes from the conferences (which do cost the conferences money). We pay our own way. The only person I compensate completely is Tamar, since she is a RustyBrick employee. But everyone else shells out a ton of money on travel, hotel and so on for the conference experience, to network, see old friends, learn stuff and also to give back to the community by sharing for those who cannot be there.

So that covers paying speakers and others to come to these events. Forum discussion on that topic at Cre8asite Forums.

Sponsor Paid & Run Sessions?
The second debate is taking place at Sphinn on the topic of sessions designed to enable the sponsors to speak and promote their products. This debate is much more heated and lively then the previous one. There are two sides of the story:

(1) The attendee is paying very good money and they don’t want to pay for a speaker to give them a sales pitch. Most attendees can get the sales pitch for free by calling the company’s 800 number and expressing interest in their services.

(2) The sponsors who pay big money want to be given the opportunity to pitch their products. They want the attendees to have a way to learn about what they can offer. They feel, if the attendee is interested, they will go to the session.

SMX & SES conference have been having these sponsored paid and run sessions for a while now. The main concern, and I noticed this when I began working on the session coverage for SES, was that SES is having a whole time slot to only session paid presentations. If you look at the SES NY Day two agenda, and scroll down to the 3:15pm-4:30pm time slot, you will notice that the only sessions being offered are classified as “Sponsored Sessions.” That gives the attendee no choice but to either skip the whole time slot or visit a sponsored session. Typically, a conference will have a single session that is sponsored amongst three or four additional sessions that are not sponsored - giving the attendee the choice. Here, attendees may feel they have no choice.

The debate on that topic is pretty lively but civilized, so check it out at Sphinn.

Google Forgets To Renew SSL Certificate For Conversion Tracking :: Yahoo Search News

Filed under: internet marketing terms — admin @ 12:46 pm

Last night at Search Engine Land, I reported Google Forgot To Renew Their SSL Certificate.

A WebmasterWorld thread reported the issue with www.googleadservices.com SSL certificate at noon (EST). What that meant was that from between noon time and about 8pm (EST) last night, customers who clicked from your AdWords ads might have been issued a security warning on your site. This would only happen if you used Google’s conversion tracking script. But for those that did, a security warning popping up on your site, due to Google, can cause a potential buyer or prospect to quickly leave your site, even though you paid your CPC to Google for that user.

When I wrote the story, at about 4:30pm (EST), I think Google was already working on the issue. Because I was not receiving the error for the googleadservices.com SSL certificate anymore, but instead I was receiving a different error for the Google.com SSL certificate. The error was a “host name mismatch” issue, possibly Google trying to utilize the valid certificate with the expired one? I don’t know but here is a screen capture:

Google Secure Cert Expired

AdWordsAdvisor at 8:20pm (EST) told the forum that he/she “just IM’d now with those same tech folks and before I could even send my second sentence, they wrote back ‘resolved’.” So they likely fixed it before 8pm. AdWordsAdvisor said it is now on his/her calendar for March 1st, so they remember to renew it every year. Some of these certificates have to be renewed annually, there is no way to renew for 10 years (I wish there were for all).

About a month ago, Yahoo Publisher Network also forgot to renew their SSL certificate. And I believe it took Microsoft adCenter about a a month to fix their conversion tracking script issue, which also included signs of SSL issues.

Every year I need to renew my wild card SSL certificate for my servers. I honestly start the process one month in advance because for some reason, Verisign is incredibly slow in reissuing the “wild card” versions.

Forum discussion at WebmasterWorld.
