Your Laziness: Why I Love SEO So Much More Than PPC :: Digg News Central

Filed under: internet marketing terms — admin @ 12:27 pm

Laziness is Beyond Your Control

Everyone, at least on some levels, is lazy. I work my ass off, but am still lazy about doing things I do not enjoy doing. If my wife asks me to wash the dishes the hand of God strikes upon me a mean streak of laziness. It is outside my control, I swear ;)

Right now I am trying to write a sales letter, which has made me lazy, and instead made me want to write this post.

Laziness Leads to Productivity Gains

I don’t like having to think some things through too much if they can be automated. And so tools like keyword list generators are made.

I recently found a sweet affiliate program in a field where no other affiliates existed. For the right keywords, click value was about $12 a click, and I was paying like 60 cents a click. With under an hour of work, I made hundreds of dollars in daily profit with virtually no effort.

Find Something You Love And Make it Your Own

I just logged in today and saw that my conversion stats dropped to virtually nothing over the past couple days. Odd. So then I searched, and like 10 affiliates (or, more likely, 1 competing affiliate 10 times) launched ads showing for many of the keywords I bid on, with many of them stealing my exact ad copy - word for word.

Slimming Profit Margins

Bidding Wars Reduce Profits

So what is the solution? Maybe I increase my bids again. But then they will increase their bids again. A bigger and bigger piece of the profits get shipped to Google, while these clowns and I eventually compete for crumbs. One of the reasons Google does not care if others steal your ad copy (or all the content on your website) is because at the end of the day they know it erodes the value of copyright and creates a bidding war that deposits more money in their bank account.

Quick Paydays

PPC affiliate marketing and arbitrage works that way, where you find a payday, hold it for a few weeks or a few months, then someone competes and the profit margins drop, unless you have a higher visitor value it keeps costing you more time to make less, until the opportunity cost exceeds your profit potential, and then you are off hunting for the next big idea. Competitive forces make it hard for this strategy to build long-term value unless you are operating in a small market or are using a technique that is pretty dirty.

Super Affiliate Secrets

One of my friend that was doing well with PPC affiliate stuff got up to about $1,000 a day of profit for an affiliate network. He ran it for about a year, then his affiliate network decided that they would find something they love and make it their own.

If you don’t own the supply chain or have a distribution chain that is hard to replicate your competitors consist of

  • other affiliates
  • the search engines
  • quality scores and algorithmic changes
  • the companies you affiliate with
  • anyone else interested in the keyword you are buying

SEO Loves Your Profit Margins

This is why I like SEO so much more than PPC. Most people are too lazy to spend years researching their topic, years building a brand, years building links, and years building social and customer relationships. We are afraid of failure, afraid of success, and afraid that we are investing too much in one place. But, if someone sees me ranking in the organic results they can’t just clone it unless they know SEO well, and are committed for the long haul. In many cases, knowing SEO well means having capital, time, passion, and a lot of marketing knowledge.

Emotionally Engaged Brand Evangelists

Off the top of your head, how many people or brands in the SEO space can you think of? How many give you some sort of emotional response? How many helped you change your life for the better? Even in some of the most competitive and most saturated marketplaces there is not much real competition.

Thanks for the Laziness, PPC Affiliate Dude!

SEO separates out real businesses from 95% of the people buying PPC ads. The guy stealing ad copy is too lazy to compete at that level. I’ll enjoy the logarithmic growth in profits (which have been at least doubling every year) while he keeps stealing table-scraps from Google and other affiliates until his accounts get banned.

Google & Yahoo! Kill PPC Arbitrage :: Social Marketing News

Filed under: internet marketing terms — admin @ 7:05 pm

Google has been getting tighter with their control of their ads, fighting arbitrage with the following changes

  • manual reviews, smart pricing discounting (of publisher clicks), and quality scores (increasing the cost of advertising junk)
  • improved duplicate content detection
  • decreasing the clickable area in many AdSense ad units
  • killing sub-syndication of their feed with companies like Ask
  • keeping a greater percentage of ad revenue from each click
  • requiring advertiser display URLs to match ad destination (starting April 1st)

From this graph you can see the sharp rise of click arbitrage quickly fell off when Google decided to work on fixing the problem.

Yahoo! has turned a blind eye to arbitrage for years. Some people who had strong feeds only saw their arbitrage profit margins increase as the weaker players could no longer compete arbitraging Google traffic. And then Yahoo! dropped a bomb, announcing that arbitrage to their ad feeds is now against their TOS and Parked.com confirmed it.

The biggest distributed ad networks do not want to buy any traffic that is bought directly via similar networks. These companies are cutting their short term revenues in an attempt to make their ad ecosystem healthier. On multiple occasions I have logged into Yahoo! Search Marketing to see a random multi-hundred dollar spend on a keyword that typically costs under $1 a day. I, for one, am glad to see this crap die. But it died a few years too late.

Google and Yahoo want a direct relationship with publishers and merchants. They hate virtually any type of affiliate that is not a highbrow relationship. More power to the organic players, and please static text links instead!

Controlling Search Engine Access with Cookies & Session IDs :: Social Marketing News

Filed under: internet marketing terms — admin @ 12:24 pm

Posted by randfish

We’ve talked plenty in the past about methods to control search engine spiders’ access to documents on your website, and we’ve discussed cloaking in several depths as well. But I feel that an under-utilized and extremely powerful methodology for serving unique content in different ways to visitors and search engines, based on the different experiences sought by the two, is critical to advanced search engine optimization. So…. Let’s dive in!

What’s a Cookie?

A cookie is a small text file that websites can leave on a visitor’s hard disk, helping them to track that person over time. Cookies are the reason Amazon.com remembers your username between visits and the reason you don’t necessarily need to log in to your Hotmail account every time you open your browser. Cookie data typically contains a short set of information about when you last accessed a site, an ID number, and, potentially, information about your visit.

Example of Cookie Data Being Exchanged

As a website developer, you can create options to remember your visitors using cookies for tracking purposes or to display different information to users based on their actions or preferences. Common uses include remembering a username, maintaining a shopping cart, or keeping track of previously viewed content. For example, if you’ve signed up for an account with SEOmoz, we’ll give you options in your My Account page about how you want to view the blog and remember that the next time you visit.

What are Session IDs?

Session IDs are virtually identical to cookies in functionality, with one big difference. Upon closing your browser (or re-starting), session ID information is no longer stored on your hard drive (usually). The website you were interacting with may remember your data or actions, but they cannot retrieve session IDs from your machine that don’t persist (and session IDs by default expire when the browser shuts down). In essence, they’re more like temporary cookies (although, as we’ll see below, there are options to control this).

A Session ID Being Passed to the Browser

While technically speaking, session IDs are just a form of cookies without an expiration date, it is possible to set session IDs with expiration dates similar to cookies (going out decades). In this sense, they’re virtually identical to cookies. Session IDs do come with an important caveat, though - they are frequently used in the URL string, which can create serious problems for search engines (as every request produces a unique URL with duplicate content). A simple fix, however, uses conditional 301-redirecting to show bots a non-sessioned version of the page (described in detail here - search engine friendly cloaking by removing session IDs).

IMPORTANT NOTE: Any user has the ability to turn off both session IDs and/or cookies in their browser settings. This often makes web browsing considerably more difficult, and many sites will actually display a page saying that cookies/sessions are required to view their content or interact. Cookies, persistent though they may be, are also deleted by users on a semi-regular basis. This Comscore study from 2007 found that 33% of web users deleted their cookies at least once per month.

How do Search Engines Interpret Cookies & Session IDs?

They don’t. Search engine spiders aren’t built to accept cookies or session IDs and act as browsers with this functionality shut off. However, unlike visitors with non-cookie-accepting browsers, the crawlers can sometimes reach sequestered content by virtue of webmasters who want to specifically let them through. Many sites will have pages that require cookie or sessions to be enabled, but will have special rules for search engine bots, permitting them to access the content as well. Although this is technically cloaking, search engines generally allow this type of segmented content delivery.

Despite the occasional access granted engines to cookie/session-restricted pages, the vast majority of cookie & session ID usage create content, links, and pages that limit access. As web developers, we can leverage the power of this "accepted cloaking" to build more intelligent sites and pages that function in optimal ways for both humans and engines.

Why Would I Want to Use Cookies or Session IDs to Control Search Engine Access?

There are numerous potential tactics to leverage cookies and session IDs for search engine control. Below, I’ve listed many of the major strategies one can implement with these tools, but there are certainly limitless other possibilities:

  • Show Multiple Navigation Paths While Sculpting the Flow of Link Juice
Visitors to a website often have complex needs for the ways in which they’d like to view or access content. Your site may benefit from offering many paths to reaching content (by date, topic, tag, relationship, ratings, etc), but expend PageRank or link juice that would be better optimized focusing on a single, search-engine-friendly navigational structure. By showing one group of navigation to cookied users and another to the engines, you can effectively have your cake and eat it, too.
  • Keep Limited Pieces of a Page’s Content Out of the Engines’ Indices
Many pages may contain both content that you’d like to show to search engines and pieces you’d prefer only appeared for human visitors. These could include ads, login-restricted information, links, or even rich media. Once again, showing non-cookied users the plain version and cookie-accepting visitors the extended information can be invaluable. Note that this is often used in conjunction with a login, so only registered users can access the full content (think sites like Facebook or LinkedIn).
  • Grant Access to "Human-Only" or "Registered User-Only" Pages
As with snippets of content, there are often entire pages or sections of a site on which you’d like to restrict search engine access. This can be easily accomplished with cookies/sessions and even help to bring in search traffic that may convert to "registered-user" status. For example, if you had desirable content that you wished to restrict, you could create a page with a short snippet and an offer to continue reading upon registration, which would then allow access to that work at the same URL. Registered visitors would continue linking to the same URL spiders index and rank, yet wouldn’t give away the content for free in a cached version. Be aware that in these instances, the search engines will only be able to "see" the content you’ve listed on the non-registered-user page, so be careful to target your titles and snippets with keywords to receive the most traffic possible. You can see examples of this at sites like the Economist, the New York Times, and WebMasterWorld.
  • Avoid Duplicate Content Issues
One of the most promising areas for cookie/session use is to prohibit spiders from reaching multiple versions of the same content, while allowing visitors to get the version they prefer. As an example, here at SEOmoz, logged-in users can see full blog entries on our blog homepage, but search engines and non-registered users will see only the snippets. This prevents our content from being listed on multiple pages (the blog homepage and the specific post pages), and provides a positive user experience for our members. I discussed this specifically in this post on dealing with pagination and duplicate content on blogs.
  • Display Content Based on a User’s Actions or Patterns of Action
Many sites like to keep track of their users’ activities and serve targeted content that is more likely to fit their interests. In the case of many media websites, this means advertising, while for e-commerce sites, it’s more likely to be related or recently-viewed products. Bluefly.com is a good example of this - showing visitors the clothing they’ve most recently browsed.

Hopefully, this brief tutorial has given you a chance for that "Eureka!" moment to help inspire some clever cookie & session use for your SEO campaigns. As always, I’d love to hear your feedback about how you use these features on your own sites.

The Value of Fresh Links in the Eyes of Search Engines :: Social Blog Network News

Filed under: internet marketing terms — admin @ 1:20 pm

Branko at SEO Scientist wrote an excellent post named Tapping into Unconventional Link Attributes. The post was so good, it made the hot list at Sphinn over the weekend.

Since I am out on vacation, I’ll do a quick quick summary.

He plotted data showing that for his tests, there is a strong value to “fresh” or new links, the time before they receive any true PageRank and other metrics from Google. The fresh links can be used to give a site a temporary boost in rankings in Google, until Google determines the true value of those links.

I have seen signs of this for years. I felt it had two do with two things. (1) The fresh link value that Branko describes in his post and (2) the value of that link being on the home page of a site, and not deep down inside the directory structure. So when this site links out to an other site, that site might see a temporary boost in rankings and then those rankings may fall.

In any event, make sure to check out Branko’s post and the discussion at Sphinn.
