Google Fixes Referrals Commission Issue :: MSN/Live Search News

Filed under: internet marketing terms — admin @ 7:15 pm

The other week, I accused Google of skimming their affiliates, well, I was only half wrong. Google simply was displaying broken referral reports that made it look like Google was taking money away from their referral users.

A Google Groups thread confirms the issue was a “display” issue with reporting and has now been fixed.

Official Google representative, AdSensePro Ashley, said:

In our recent ‘follow-up’ post on the changes to referrals promoting AdSense, Talia noted that we were aware that recent referrals conversions were not appearing in some publishers accounts. As mentioned in this post, this was a display error, and past conversions were not removed from your accounts.

Please note that these conversions are now displaying correctly in your accounts again.

So the numbers should look accurate now and Google is really not skimming you guys.

Forum discussion at Google Groups.

How to Write for the Web :: Yahoo Search News

Filed under: internet marketing terms — admin @ 6:46 pm

Posted by Nabha

This is condensed from various sources, including especially Jakob Nielsen’s articles on Writing for the Web.

Why do you need to know how to write for SEO?

If you spend time writing any of the following:

  • Page titles (the <title> tag)
  • Page descriptions
  • Link text
  • Page content, including the main headline

… the advice in this post will help your writing be more effective, and more likely to be read.

Writing for the web is different

Online reading is a new phenomenon. Accordingly, writing for the web has evolved a set of requirements different from print publishing.

People scan rather than read

Are you scanning this post? When reading online, people’s attention span is much shorter than when they read printed copy. People scan web pages.

Imagine people driving through your website at 60 mph, treating the site as a series of billboards rather than reading it carefully.

Get a second opinion

We are very close to our writing. Ask someone else to read your piece. Have you made all your points clear?

"Sleep on it" overnight to gain a new perspective.

Less is more

Take what you would write for print, and cut it in half. Then cut it in half again!

It sounds drastic, but the researchers who study people’s web reading habits insist on this formula.

Strunk and White wrote in The Elements of Style:

"Vigorous writing is concise. A sentence should contain no unnecessary words, a paragraph no unnecessary sentences, for the same reason that a drawing should have no unnecessary lines and a machine no unnecessary parts."

Exception to Less is More

On a website I worked on, the copy to describe a course grew by 5 times. The reason was the course’s high price. People need sufficient information to make a decision involving a lot of money.

To offset the increase in copy, we did the following:

  • Used bullets
  • Edited it carefully
  • Split it into 5 pages

Afterwards, we saw a marked increase in attendance.

The opposite is also true: the less commitment a person needs to make, the less copy there should be.

Use words that everyone can understand

Avoid, replace, or define industry terms or other "in-house" terminology. This includes acronyms. If the reader doesn’t understand your words, they will tune you out.

The title is the most important part

Make the title engaging to the reader. More than anything else, the title determines whether or not people will click through from the search engines.

If you can, match the title of a page to its main headline, so that after people click on through from a search engine, they will feel that they’ve come to the right place. More than anything else in your page content, the headline determines whether or not people will read the page.

Short paragraphs

Draw the reader in by making the first paragraph short.

Text surrounded by white space attracts the eye, and offers a "minimal friction entry point." All other paragraphs can be 1 to 5 sentences long.

The first 2 words: especially important for SEO

The first 2 words in a paragraph or bullet point often determine whether people will want to read the rest. Think of this when you’re writing titles, especially, for titles are almost never read carefully!

Numerals

Numerals (2, 3, etc.) are more likely to be read than numbers that are spelled out (two, three, etc.)

Lists

Use bullets or numbered lists: they are easy to scan. People notice the items at the top and the bottom the most.

Adjectives

Use them sparingly. New writers especially should avoid adjectives, which tend to add emotional coloring instead of content.

Editing

If you do the work of editing, the reader won’t have to. If you don’t, the reader may not do the work (of reading) at all!

One author I know has edited his writing as much as 50 times. And I once read a grammar book that said: "Avoid even a split-second of confusion." Good advice for the web.

This is my first contribution to SEOmoz; I hope you enjoyed it. Please share your thoughts in the comments. For further reading, I recommend:

Thursday Roundup for the Week of 1/13/08 :: Social Marketing News

Filed under: internet marketing terms — admin @ 12:41 pm

Posted by rebecca

Stories, news, and other notable items from the past week:

Three star links:

  • David LaFerney (aka DrDave) wrote a post about on page SEO for WordPress. It’s a nice, simple, handy guide on what factors to keep in mind when working with a WordPress powered website. Give it a read if you need some good tips.
  • The NY Times brings us "Handmade 2.0," an article about how handmade goods have gone all web 2.0 with sites like Rand-approved Etsy. I think it’s cool how something as seemingly "old school" as handmade goods (think knitting, crocheting, and anything else your grandma is particularly adept at [mine kept a rock in a sock in her purse for protection. I’m not lying]) is all "young and hippified" with clean sites and user-generated content.
  • Matt McGee, David Mihm, and Logoworks bring us the 2008 SEMMY Awards, a culmination of the year’s best posts in SEM. It’s a good roundup of posts from this past year, so check them out if any of them slipped through the cracks. Winners will be announced soon, though after the SEJ Awards and Rand’s critique about how it was structured, I’m feeling a little blog awards fatigue. Still, if you were nominated, congratulations and best of luck to you.
  • If you’d laid awake at night wondering what John Chow, Jeremy Schoemaker, Guy Kawasaki, and Rand Fishkin drive, read What Do the Top Bloggers Drive? over on DavePit.com and then go to bed. Rand’s a little sad that Dave didn’t post an image of an empty highway to showcase the imaginary Fishkinmobile.
  • Barry Schwartz confesses that he’s not a good sales man. That’s okay, Barry, because you’re a wonderful blogger and bringer of new SEO developments, and I don’t know what the SEO community would do without you. Meanwhile, Andrew Goodman counters back that Barry is "actually quite a clever salesman." Hmm, we’re onto you, Barry!

Four star links:

  • I received a press release from Hitwise that stated MySpace received 76% of U.S. social networking visits in 2007, while Facebook came in second with a distant 16.03% of visits (Bebo, BlackPlanet.com, and Club Penguin round out the top 5). Conversely, the average time spent on Facebook increased 100% from 2006 to 2007 (19 minutes, 51 seconds in 2007 compared to 9 minutes, 56 seconds in 2006), while the average time on MySpace actually worsened by 2% (29 minutes 36 seconds in 2007 vs. 30 minutes 5 seconds in 2006). The press release states that "U.S. traffic to all the social networking websites increased four percent year-over-year." However, Bill Tancer reported that MySpace moved into the #1 position for all Internet sites.
  • The LA Times has an article called "Why People Believe Weird Things About Money." It’s an interesting read–more people would prefer to earn twice as much as someone else than make more but earn less than their peer. Wait, that was confusing. Oh, just read the article. It’s full of lots of psychological know-how about why we’re neurotic about the Benjamins.
  • The Google Webmaster Central Blog released a Sitemaps FAQ. A lot of questions are answered and it’s a great resource for all you webmasters out there who are getting stumped with Sitemaps.
  • Conversation Marketing advises us on how we can double email open rates. Simple testing is all you need!

Five star links:

  • KillerStartups.com gets a five star link because it’s an interesting concept and a potentially valuable site. The site reviews over 30 startups each work day, and it allows users to vote for the ones they think will take off. The site’s great for both discovering new startups and for your competitive research efforts.

Interesting YOUmoz entries:

Best of YOUmoz:

  • Robots Exclusion Protocol 101 by Sebastian was a YOUmoz entry that we promoted to the main blog. Sebastian does a fantastic job of explaining the REP and various directives. It’s a lot of information to process, but it’s very smartly written and an extremely useful introduction to understanding what the REP is and how it works.

Google Stops Serving AdSense Ads on IncrediMail :: Yahoo Search News

Filed under: internet marketing terms — admin @ 5:54 pm

On Friday, news leaked that Google has discontinued its AdSense partnership with IncrediMail, a publicly-traded Internet content and media company that has over 10 million members.

This is baffling and quite sad. We can imagine that Google AdSense was a good chunk of the company’s revenue, and now that option cannot be pursued.

So why did this happen? And why wasn’t IncrediMail given adequate warning about any abuse (if that is the case?)

Numerous forum members believe that the traffic quality could have been poor. Additionally, while some forum members applaud the excellent quality of service that they get from IncrediMail, not all members feel that way:

My guess though is Google got sick of being associated with incredimail’s rather tacky advertsing/marketing gimmicks and just gave up trying to work with them.

But why IncrediMail and not other MFA sites? Obviously, this is irksome to many:

Great negotiating posture. Nuke one good company’s revenue stream while leaving millions of MFA pages untouched. So if anyone thinks it’s about “do no evil” or fairness, they now know Google will negotiate Microsoft-Style.

Any company who depends on Adsense for business and negotiating a deal w/ Google now has to worry that Google will pull the rug out from under them if they don’t cave to Google’s demands.

I guess it all comes down to just not putting all your eggs in one basket. If Google AdSense drops you, you need to have a backup plan. Still, with a 45% tank in its stock price from the event, it’s incredibly unfortunate and hopefully these issues will be resolved with a statement from both companies.

Forum discussion continues at WebmasterWorld.
